May 20th – 23rd, 2024
Over the next few days it was interesting to adjust since I had been in such a different part of the world for about 4 months. Everything from the weather to the people were different. Plus, of course I had some lovely jet lag. The main thing that was throwing me off was that I wasn’t in a hostel, but a full functional apartment. It was such a comforting feeling. In addition, Vera had 2 of the fluffiest companions ever, I fell in love with them.
The day after my flight, Vera took me out to a little hiking area where we got some ice cream and sunshine. She had work in the evening, and I was exhausted. The next few days I was mostly trying to catch up on my sleep and just relax. Backpacking is fun but it really does take a toll on you.
She showed me the city center in Amersfoort, 10 minutes walking away, and it was exactly how I thought it would look, European. I love the old buildings architecture and the layout of the city with the river. We stopped to grab some lunch and as we were eating on the Patio it started to pour. Since they are so use to this type of weather they had massive umbrellas/tarps to open up to cover everyone.
Tea anyone?
A few days into my time in the Netherlands and I knew my clothing I had wouldn’t suffice. It was quite cold and all my clothing was geared towards 30 degree heat. I took the day to walk around the neighbourhood then into the city center for some shopping. I loved the tiny triangle shaped houses. I got a pair of jeans, a book, and some shirts. The jeans came in handy for the rest of my trip and Vera lent me some of her sweaters.
The city center, I feel like I got lucky coming to Amersfoort because apparently it’s one of the oldest cities in Netherlands, so the architecture around was more interesting.

On my way back I caught a bit of the sunset.

Plus, that day I realized most of my postcards had finally made it to Canada and to all my friends and family. I was happy they at least got them before I was home. My manager is the main reason I could pursue this trip and I’m so glad I sent a postcard to my work.
