We made it to Laos! The Border was empty and we both were grabbing VOA’s (visa upon arrival). We filled out some forms and ended up waiting behind one woman with a dog, that they didn’t want to let over the border. Finally we got across after waiting awhile, got a bus to take us to the other side, where a bunch of taxis were waiting. Kelsey and I both booked our own room for the night last minute and it wasn’t the best start to Laos.😅 Anyways we checked in, grabbed dinner, and made plans for tomorrows adventure; the 2 day slow boat to Luang Prabang. We agreed we had to get up at 6am to be at the pier for 8am.

The next day : April 28th, 2024

It was rough getting up really early, especially after a bad sleep. We packed everything up and started walking. The Pier was around 1KM away so we took the time to walk there. Once we arrived we were told the boat wasn’t coming until a bit later. We were never given a straight forward answer about the time which is why we went so early. We ended up grabbing some breakfast while waiting, I got some rice soup(congee).

While we were eating we saw Mary and Blenda from Pai, and they were catching the same boat as us!

By 8 am we were allowed to start heading onto the boat. I had heard so many stories about the slow boat, some absolutely amazing and some absolutely horrible. But either way, everyone recommended it for the experience. Kelsey and I sat close to Mary and Blenda. To our surprise 2 more people from the Pai family hopped on, Mattieus and Thibaut. It was such a fun coincidence. In front of my seats we met a girl named Rita (From USA) and another backpacker.

The slow boat consisted of a lot of fellow backpackers, more than I thought there would be. But throughout the trip the boat would make stops to drop or pick up local people along the river. We had a 6 hour journey ahead of us.

The views were nice, some mountains, wildlife, and greenery. The slow boat was more about time spent with others playing cards, making up silly games, napping, or reading. It was pretty peaceful at times or very fun.

Day 1 went by pretty fast, which happens when you have good company. We all hopped off the boat in the evening to be greeted by many hostel or hotel owners offering rooms. It was actually helpful since we hadn’t booked anything and they had transportation to the places.

We got settled in and then went for Indian food. Surprisingly tasty. That night we all met up at a bar to hangout but called it early since we had to get up early the next day for round 2.
