I’ve always loved Elephants. I saw them in the wild when I was in Zambia years ago on my first backpacking trip. This was a more intimate way of meeting them. We also came at a good time because the sanctuary had baby elephants as well. They ranged from 1-3 years old I believe and they were already huge. I loved every second of the experience. When we arrived we were greeted by the people who ran the place, they gave us a rundown of the tour and gave us special shirts to wear.
They gave us buckets of bamboo shoots to help us ease into meeting the Elephants. It took a good 10 minutes to feed them all the snacks, but it helped make them more comfortable with us visiting.
After the initial meeting we all headed into the open field to hang out and pet the elephants. I’ve only seen elephants from afar before so I didn’t know what they felt like. It was so weird. They had rough skin and then very sparse coarse hair. I just enjoyed being around them while they were doing their own thing.

I fell in love with their flapping ears, it was the cutest thing. Except when you’re right beside them and they start flapping. It’s like a big whack haha.

We took a break to make some snacks/medicine they get everyday. Basically just vitamins and nutrients they need hidden in banana and oats. We all helped add all the ingredients to a bowl and took turns pounding it into a paste. After it was done we headed to the next area to feed them and then bathe them.

Time for a bath!

The water was pretty nasty! But worth it, they had showers to use afterwards to clean up, which was very appreciated. Once everyone was all cleaned up we were given a vegetarian lunch and had a nice time to meet everyone on the tour.
