Date Update : April 14th, 2024

Songkran is usually on April 13th every year, but they always extend it to the 14th and 15th. Because I spent the other day staying in I wanted to get out and do something. The Pai Canyon was on my list of things to see. I embraced the fact that I would probably get water thrown on me if I went out and that was okay with me. I just had to make it through the small streets in town to the bigger main roads that wouldn’t have many people splashing water on others. I decided going to a restaurant for food was too risky so I decided to stop at a 7/11 on the way. Outside of the 7/11 I was met by a few girls who were really sweet to not drench me and they marked me with some white paste which is called “din sor pong”. All the Thai people were wearing it or passing it onto travellers, and it’s a new years ritual that wards off evil spirits and gives protection to the wearer.

Before and After:

I felt like a true Thai person, with the white powder on my face eating a 7/11 toasty. I sat on the curb at 7/11 before making the drive to the Pai Canyon, which was only 10-15 minutes away.

There was a small walk up a hill to get to the canyon but even that was pretty. I tried to go to the canyon an hour or so before sunset so I could watch it from there.

As soon as I got to the top I was shocked. The pictures don’t even do it justice.

The sun was slowly setting so after exploring around, I went a bit away from the crowds to find a quiet place to watch the sunset. It turned into a little hike down a small path to find a place to relax. It was absolutely surreal that I was in such a beautiful place enjoying my own company.

The Pai Canyon left me in the awe of how beautiful nature can be. Once the sun went behind the mountains I headed back to my scooter to head back to Paifah.

On my drive back I was just enjoying the scenery and saw a huge old buddha statue. I decided to pull over and go explore the area. It was just something different to do. Then when I got back to Paifah, I joined Momo for dinner.
