When we arrived at the farm we got an introduction from the woman who runs the whole place by herself. She introduced us to her two dogs that helped keep the farm in check and then we quickly got down to business and went to see all the animals. First we visited the alpacas, sheep, pigs, yaks, and a couple calves. I loved that we were able to go and walk around with the animals. We got some food so we could feed and pet the animals. The yaks were adorable and fun to feed/pet but we had to be careful not to go to close to them because if they were to move their head that would be a very bad injury.
After at least 10 minutes with all those beautiful animals we went around to the other side of the farm where we got to see some horses, goats, and the cutest little piglet.
After we had time to see them all, the woman brought all the sheep over and showed us how the dogs would help with herding the sheep into one area. It was cool to see because one dog had to be silent and move the sheep around by blocking or chasing them and the other one would run around and bark to make them move a certain way.
After we got the demonstration it was our turn. We got into teams of 5 or so and had to be the “dogs” and try to herd all the sheep into one area. It was hilarious to watch. People were running around chasing the sheep and yelling at them and the sheep would just scatter everywhere. It was harder than it looked that’s for sure. It was my groups turn and we kind of had a plan of where to stand and what to do and we actually did it and got all the sheep into the one area. Other groups didn’t do so well and it was hilarious because sometimes only one or two sheep would be stranded and run around so the group would loose the competition.
We were all finished with our stay at the farm and it was such a great experience. We all washed our hands and got onto the bus . It was so funny because one of the goats followed us and ended up in one of the seats on the bus. Obviously it wasn’t coming with us but we all thanked the woman, she took her goat off the bus and we were on our way to a town called Te Anau.
