(April 25&26 – 2 day 1 night Fraser Island tour) After 3 weeks living with other families it was time to travel on my own in hostels up the east coast. The next stop for me was up to Hervey Bay so I could get picked up for a 2 day 1 night Fraser Island tour. We had to catch the ferry over to Fraser island which took about an hour. Once we were there we were called into our tour groups. My group had approximately 25 people on it. We had a pink bus for the duration of our time and our journey started that day.
Unfortunately the weather wasn’t on our side, it was pretty cloudy and ended raining the whole second day. I had a good group of people on our tour and we made the most of it and had a blast, rain or shine. Our first stop was Mackenzie Lake which is known for its white sand and clear blue water. We got a good chunk of time to go swimming before we had a buffet lunch.
Half the fun was being on the bus and enjoying the crazy ride. Since it was rainy all the sand made huge hills and dips, so it was a pretty fun going through the rain forest. While I was on the trip our guide always had facts or stories to share and I still can’t believe I was on the largest island made of only sand in the world. It’s crazy to think about all the nature that thrives on the island.
We stopped at another lake that was known for its green colour, it was clean but it was filled with algae that turned it green. There were also these weird plants that were carnivores almost like a flytrap plant. They survived in water or air but looked completely harmless. We also heard many stories about dingos and to be cautious about them but it was cool to see their tracks.
We just toured the island and stopped for hikes here and there. I don’t know the name but there was a type of tree that grows around other trees and the way he explained it sounded so bad. In conclusion the one type of tree wraps around the tree and ends up suffocating the tree and completely covers it. It looked really cool because of how it grew though.
We ended the day trying to catch the sunset back at the docks we arrived on. Unfortunately since it was a cloudy day all day there was absolutely no sunset but we enjoyed each others company over a bucket of beer.
Second day. We woke up bright and early to start the day. It rained on and off through the whole day which was a bummer. We went on another hike through the rain forest and got some interesting information regarding the trees surrounding us. A lot of people were mad because they thought people scratched into the trees and ruined them but they were wrong. All the squiggles and lines across the trees were there from a type of caterpillar. The trees had sap underneath the first layer and when they are born they bite and make their way through the bark to get to the sap. All the lines are the tracks that they left behind.
Our first stop was at the Maheno shipwreck. The waves would come in and out and we took our shoes off to go in the water closer to the shipwreck. We used the panorama feature on the camera and would run around the person taking the picture and try to get in the picture twice.
Continuing on the beach we got to see some dingos while on the bus ride. They look exactly like dogs but we had to be very cautious if we went outside and saw some.
We went to the pinnacles which were very colourful from all the minerals that have continued to degrade all the rocks. While we were outside as a big group the two same dingos we saw earlier were there again but as a big group they wouldn’t bother us. It was fun to walk around with them just lengths from us.
Last but not least we headed over to a river that we called the lazy river. We pumped up some floaties and went in the rain to go in the freezing river. It would’ve been the worst experience but with my great group we made the best of it and had a blast. We tried to warm up and headed back for a sunset but again there wasn’t one. We grabbed our last dinner and headed back on the ferry.
