(February 15th) On Friday Haruko and I planned a day trip out to visit Shanghai. We took the bullet train which is around 25 minutes. We bought tickets to go on the maglev which is a magnetic levitation train, meaning it technically floats on the tracks. It was really cool and almost feels like a roller coaster when you turn because the whole train tilts.

I also tried McDonalds Chinese version of a jr chicken and it’s completely different. They also have way more choices of what you can have as a side in a meal. I like to compare McDonalds around the world because they always seem to have better things than in Canada.

Once we had lunch we went back on the maglev and went over to check out the streets of Shanghai. The first thing Haruko wanted to show me were the spiral escalators. The mall they were in was so beautiful with lighting, sparkles, and decorations everywhere you looked.

We mostly walked around Shanghai to sightsee but that took the whole day because there was so much to see there. We went down many roads one in paticular was Nanjing Road. There is a huge river that goes through the city and looking across I saw all these futuristic buildings and the famous Pearl Tower. It was so foggy that day so it cut off the tops of some buildings. Looking at that side and then back over to the side we were on was such a weird contrast. This area was taken over by the British way back in history so now there are buildings built with old British architecture that line the street.

We ended up in this little area that was just completely decorated for the New Years and there were red lanterns everywhere. The streets were kind of narrow and packed but it was nice to just walk through. We ended up stopping at a tea shop to get out of the rain. Their coffee menu was strange and one of the english translations said “washed coffee”. I didn’t know what to expect but got it anyways and it was good so that’s all that matters.

Afterwards we exited the area and walked down a huge road with shops lighting the way. Once again there was more British architecture, it was a very old style on the outside but on the inside it was renovated to look very modern. After a day of sightseeing and a little shopping we went back home and got dinner just in a mall food court but everything is always so yummy.
